[ARCHIVED] Calling all kids, join a book club!

Photo of kids discussing books at a book club. Reading just got more fun! Kids in Washington County Library book clubs have saved mythical creatures with the Unicorn Rescue Society, brought books to life with mini-plays, and have even met the real-life authors of the books they read.

(Plus, they strengthen their literacy skills, diversify their reading habits, and build social skills – but we don’t have to tell THEM that).

If you know a kid who enjoys snacks and hanging out with their pals, check out these clubs designed specifically for them.

Times and locations are subject to change, so double-check our event calendar before stopping in.

Read Aloud Book Club: Grades K - 2

R.H. Stafford Library  |  1st Monday of each month | 4 p.m. | Registration required!

Don't miss out on this NEW book club, starting October 7! Each gathering will include an activity and a snack. No need to read the book ahead of time.

This club is lead by Teresa, who hopes to encourage a love of reading and allow emerging readers to build reading comprehension. She chooses books that offer a challenge without being too difficult. She also looks for books with great illustrations, and says, “For younger readers, the illustrations are just as important as the text. They guide in telling the story.”

Park Grove Library  |  1st Tuesday of each month | 1:12 p.m. | Registration not required

Read all four books in the series at this limited-time book club. Katelyn, a Park Grove librarian, started this club to help home school families meet one another, build community, and encourage creative thinking. Kids will complete an art activity while listening to the story. A writing activity will be available to take home and complete.

Tween Thursdays Book Club: Ages 8 - 12

R.H. Stafford Library  | 2nd to last Thursday of each month | 5:30 p.m. | Registration not required

Do you know someone who feels too old for "kid" programs but not old enough for teen programs? Join Tween Thursdays Book Club to talk about a shared title, enjoy some snacks, and do an activity with friends.

This club is organized by Tiffany, who says, "continuing a love of storytelling and book discussion at early ages sets up our kids for a lifelong love of books, learning, and conversation." Tweens can share their favorite books and help choose future books for the group.

Hardwood Creek Library  |  Select Saturdays | 2 p.m. | Registration not required

Shelby chooses newer books with themes that generate important or interesting conversations. One of the club’s favorite books was The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Squirrel Meets World, the origin story for the comic book character Squirrel Girl. Each month the club discusses the selected book, does an activity or craft, and has fun!

Grade School Book Club: Ages 9 - 13

Park Grove Library  | 3rd Thursday of each month | 4 p.m. | Registration required!

Expect the unexpected in Grade School Book Club - kids who join might meet some surprise visitors. When this club read the books The Key to Everything and A Crack in the Sea, the authors attended!

This group is organized by Katelyn, who chooses books that examine new cultures and community. She says, “it's enjoyable, encouraging, and inspirational seeing young people interact with the creator of a story.” Please sign up at Park Grove Library.
