[ARCHIVED] Focus on mental health in May

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, Washington County Library will offer a series of programs by NAMI Minnesota (National Alliance on Mental Illness) at branches throughout the county.

These programs will focus on ways individuals can improve their mental health and how communities can better understand and help individuals with mental illness. Upcoming programs include:

Creating Caring Communities – Learn about mental illnesses, the impact of negative attitudes and five things each of us can do to make Minnesota a better place for people who experience a mental illness.

Eating with Mental Health in Mind – Learn about the ways nutrition can boost your overall mental well-being.

Physical Activity and Mindfulness – Learn how physical activity and mindfulness contribute to wellness. The program will include a discussion, educational resources, and more.

In Our Own Voice – Understand the journey of people with mental illness in recovery through this unique public education program in which two trained speakers share compelling personal stories about living with a mental illness and achieving recovery.

According to NAMI Minnesota, mental illnesses can affect people of any age, race, religion, or socioeconomic status. About one in four American adults experiences an episode of mental illness each year. According to the CDC, mental health disorders account for more disability that any other illness, including cancer and heart disease.

Find all six programs in our online calendar at WashCoLib.link/MentalHealth.

NAMI Minnesota is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults with mental illnesses and their families. For over 40 years, NAMI Minnesota has worked to promote the development of community mental health programs and services, change public attitudes about mental illnesses, improve access to services and increase opportunities for recovery.
