[ARCHIVED] Save broken items from the trash at an upcoming Fix-It Clinic

Give broken items destined for the garbage a second chance at one of our upcoming Fix-it Clinics at R.H. Stafford Library in Woodbury

We have four more Fix-It Clinics scheduled for 2019: April 20, June 15, August 10, and October 12. All Fix-It Clinics will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

A fix-it clinic brings together talented people with a knack for repairs with individuals looking to save their broken items from being thrown away. Participants can bring in up to three items to work alongside a fixer who will disassemble, troubleshoot, and repair the piece.

We held our first Fix-It Clinic in partnership with the Washington County Department of Public Health and Environment on January 12. During the three-hour clinic, 30 participants worked alongside nine volunteer fixers on items like like electronic holiday decorations, table lamps, coffee machines, and the board game “Operation.”

In total, community members brought in 48 items to be repaired. More than 90 percent of the items were fixed at the clinic, or could be repaired after proper parts or tools were acquired. Because of this success, 228 pounds of material were diverted from the waste stream.

All items for a Fix-It Clinic must be carry-in sized. Examples include broken lamps, small household appliances (toasters, blenders), small electronics, and torn clothing or household items.

In addition to participants, we're also looking for volunteers to lend their time and talents at the Fix-It Clinic. If you are handy and have a flair for repair, visit WashCoLib.Link/FixIt for the volunteer application.

Can't make one of those dates? There are Fix-It Clinics happening at several other library systems in the Twin Cities. You can learn more about them in the Pioneer Press.
