[ARCHIVED] Six online tools for a better back to school

computer notebook and backpack

Many students (and parents) might think of the library as just a place to check out books or find a quiet place to study.

And while we are excited about those offerings, Washington County Library also has a number of digital tools that can help students conduct research, study for tests, and get homework help from trained tutors. Below are six of our favorites!

A quick note – most of these tools require a library card to login, so make sure you have your number handy before you get started.

Research in Context

Targeted at students in grades 6-8, Research in Context can be used to search magazines, newspapers and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, and more. Check out these tutorial videos for more help getting started.

Student Resources in Context

This database is designed for high school students, and can be used for both homework and in-depth research assignments to find articles, primary documents, creative works, and multimedia files. Explore an interactive tutorial or check out these help videos to get started.

Explora Kids and Explora Teens

Explora Kids and Explora Teens offer searches for age appropriate magazines, encyclopedias, and dictionaries. Explora Teens also includes primary source documents, reference books, and multimedia. Learn more with this Explora Kids Fact Sheet and Explora Teens Fact Sheet

LearningExpress Library

Students can take online practice tests, view tutorials, and find resources for school and career exams. Popular tests include the ACT, AP, GED, Nursing, Real Estate, TOEFL, and U.S. Citizenship. Get started with this help video

Homework HelpNow

Homework HelpNow offers free tutoring services for kids, teens, and adults available from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Both LearningExpress Library and Homework HelpNow are great tools for online test prep. Learn more in this recent blog post

Britannica Online Public Library Edition
