The Washington County Law Library invites the public to a session on the rights of grandparents and others who are raising their relative's children on October 24, 2016 from 1:00-2:30 in room LL16 of the Washington County Government Center, located at 14949 62nd St. N, in Stillwater, MN.

Increasingly, more and more children are being raised by persons other than their biological parents. Six million children in the United States live with grandparents or other relative-maintained households. While grandparents were the traditional caregivers if their adult children cannot parent, recent trends show that aunts and family friends are now increasingly stepping into the caregiver role.

The term "kinship caregiver" means any relative or close family friend who is caring for children not his or her own. Kinship caregiving can be temporary or permanent, formal or informal. Moreover, kinship caregivers frequently face significant financial burdens as they take on the responsibility of additional children.

If you find yourself becoming the caregiver to your relative's children, would you know what to do?

At this session, participants will learn about the social and legal resources available to those who are parenting their relative's children. They will get answers to questions such as:

What legal relationship options do I have?
How are third-party custody, adoption, guardianship, or a private agreement different, and what is right for my situation?
How can I help a relative's child who is in foster care?
How can I get medical coverage my relative's (or friend's) child?
What state or county resources are available?
