Write in Our Midst returns as part of our Winter Reads program for adults. This annual local author series spotlights Minnesota writers from a wide range of genres and invites readers to hear directly from the authors.

All events are free and held in person at various Washington County Library branches. Engage with author, discover new books, and celebrate the vibrant literary community right here in our area. Learn more about each event below, and find additional information in our calendar!

Tasha Coryell — Love Letters to a Serial Killer

Tasha Coryell specializes in psychological suspense infused with dark humor. Her novel, Love Letters to a Serial Killer, explores character-driven storytelling that keeps readers on edge while diving deep into the complexities of the human psyche. Coryell’s love of thrillers helped inspire her to start writing stories that are both suspenseful and fun.

Hear Coryell discuss her writing process and inspirations at R.H. Stafford Library in Woodbury on January 17, 11 a.m.–noon.

Varla Ventura — Enchanted Plants

Varla Ventura is a traveler, folklorist, and self-described “rotten botanist” with a deep love for the strange and unusual. In Enchanted Plants: A Treasury of Botanical Folklore and Magic, Ventura explores the role of plants in both fairy and folk tales, where plants and their magic and medicine are central to the story.

For a fascinating look at the mysterious side of nature through folklore and storytelling, don’t miss Ventura at Wildwood Library in Mahtomedi on January 27, 6–7 p.m.

Ethan Johnson — Dishonor, Vol. 1

Woodbury High School alumnus Ethan Johnson is the author and illustrator of Dishonor, Vol. 1, a graphic novel inspired by samurai films, Japanese mythology, and a lifelong love of storytelling and art. Dishonor, Vol. 1 follows an adolescent monk who believes that life as a samurai warrior is the key to respect, only to discover that life by the sword is more complex—and less heroic—than he once imagined. Johnson has been drawing and writing stories since childhood, a passion that turned him into a social media sensation.

Hear insights into the graphic novel process and meet Johnson at Park Grove Library in Cottage Grove on January 28, 6:30–7:30 p.m.

Ellie Palmer — Anywhere Without You

Ellie Palmer writes romantic comedies featuring delightfully messy characters that explore emotional journeys and relationships. Her novel, Anywhere Without You, is a charming road trip romance filled with adventure and friendship that reflects her love for Minnesota, taking readers across both real and imagined landscapes throughout the state.

Ken Kerns — Anything but Frank

Woodbury resident Ken Kearns is a cancer survivor, memoirist, and creative storyteller. In Anything but Frank: A Journey of Healing, Patience, and Ruth Discovery, Kerns shares the highs and lows of recovery, rebuilding his life, and finding meaning in life’s small victories.

Join Kearns for a heartfelt conversation at Lake Elmo Library on February 10, 6–7 p.m.
