Virtual Author Visits
Karen M. McManus
Young adult author Karen McManus will join us for a special virtual author visit! Her books include the One of Us Is Lying series, which has been turned into a television show on Peacock and Netflix, as well as the standalone novels Two Can Keep a Secret, The Cousins, You’ll Be the Death of Me, and Nothing More to Tell.
Registration is required. This event will be hosted virtually via Zoom. Instructions and a link to join the event will be emailed to registered participants.
Junauda Petrus-Nasah
Young adult author Junauda Petrus will join us for a special virtual author visit. Junauda is the author of The Stars And The Blackness Between Them, winner of the 2020 Coretta Scott King Honor Book Award. Registration is required. This event will be hosted virtually via Zoom. Hip-Hop and the Spoken Word with See More Perspective
Join COMPAS teaching artist See More Perspective for a workshop exploring hip hop and the spoken word. This workshop explores social identity and how it informs the choices we make as artists and as people. There will be activities that help illuminate your own identity and values, reflect with peers, and begin to discover your own creative voice.
Altered Books with Artistry
Learn how to repurpose old and unloved books and turn them into new works of art. Different techniques will be explored including black-out poetry, paper folding, paper cutting, painting, drawing, and more. If you wish, feel free to bring a book you don’t mind remaking into a new work of art. We will supply books for anyone who does not bring one.
Paste Paper Books with ArtStart
Paste paper is one of the oldest techniques used by book binders and artists to create decorative book covers and end pages, dating back to the 16th century. Artist, Meg Erke, will help you create a variety of decorative papers using this historic technique in this program at Valley Library.
Anime and Manga Portraits
Students will start by viewing, discussing, and sketching in various anime and manga drawing styles. We will then use the skills and techniques we’ve explored in order to create a stylized anime portrait of a friend, family member, or celebrity.
SLAM! The Art and Craft of Competitive Poetry
Join COMPAS Teaching Artist Danny Solis as we explore the history of poetry slam from its humble beginning on Chicago's South side to its global presence and international competitive events. Participants will also create and perform original work.
