B.K. Parent, a writer and patron at Wildwood Library, is one of two winners in a self-published author contest organized by Minnesota libraries.

Her novel, Journey's Middle, was the winner in the young adult fiction category. Parent is a retired school psychologist and a lifelong storyteller. The book was originally written as a serial sent by email once a week to friends and family.

The winning adult fiction title is Betting on Paradise by Lizbeth Selvig, a Lonsdale Library patron. Selvig has worked as a journalist and magazine editor. She now writes fun, contemporary romance novels.

Finalists in the young adult category include Evalene’s Number by Bethany Atazadeh and They’re Always With You by Mary Lockman. Finalists in the adult fiction category include Nerve Damage by Tom Combs and Castle Danger by Chris Norbury.

Winners received $1,000 and a write up in Library Journal, one of the country’s most respected publications for library news. Minnesota libraries plan to host another contest in 2019, so start finishing up your books!

The two winning titles – Journey's Middle and Betting on Paradise – are also available as ebooks through MN Writes MN Reads. The remaining titles will be available through the Washington County Library catalog soon.

This annual contest was organized in conjunction with the launch of MN Writes MN Reads, a suite of tools that allows authors and readers to create, share, and read ebooks. All of the entries submitted in this year's contest were judged by a panel of Minnesota librarians, booksellers, and educators. Winners were announced on October 11 at the Minnesota Library Association Conference.
