Happy “birthday” to our video game collection

Patrons checked out video games in the Washington County Library collection more than 5,000 times in the 12-month period they were first made available.

The collection of more than 100 video games, compatible with PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Wii U consoles, launched in October 2017. It was part of the library’s on-going commitment to spark opportunity, inspire curiosity, and champion innovation through new programs, events, and offerings.

From data collected about the video game collection circulation we are excited to see that:

There were 5,131 total checkouts of video games by library cardholders.

Adults made up 62 percent of those checkouts (although we think the 74 senior adults who took home video games are the real rock stars).

From October 30, 2017 to October 15, 2018, 1,010 holds were placed and filled for library users. The video game collections had shelf space at four Washington County Library locations (Hardwood Creek, Oakdale, Park Grove, and R.H. Stafford libraries), but cardholders could reserve the games online and pick them up from the hold shelf any Washington County Library location.

The top titles checked out:

#1 - Mariokart 8

#2 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

#3 - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

#4 (three-way tie) - Madden NFL 18, Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy, Assassin’s Creed: Origins

The top requested titles:

#1 – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

#2 – LEGO Marvel Adventure

#3 – Cars 3: Driven to Win

#4 – Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy

#5 (tie) – Sonic Lost World, Madden NFL 18

The pilot program was so successful that video games will be added to the shelves at Lake Elmo, Valley, and Wildwood libraries in the coming months. Plans are also in the works to add previous generations of games and create video game kits (including one with retro gaming consoles) for use in library programs.

Stay tuned as we work on leveling up the video game collection at Washington County Library. In the meantime, get gaming!
