Spotlight On... Summer Learning

apple and books

This month, we’re highlighting resources we have to help children and families to stay curious and keep learning throughout the summer.

We’re excited to be adding a new resource in our catalog – access to Lexile measures for our children’s materials! Lexile and other reading measurements are used to help identify reading materials that meet each child’s independent reading ability. They’re designed to help find “just right” books that are a little challenging, but not so difficult that a young reader gets frustrated.

You can now search for books based on Lexile measures in our catalog, or learn about converting other leveled reading systems into Lexile. Not sure how to start? Check out our Lexile resource page, ask a librarian at your local branch, or use our Ask a Librarian service for personalized recommendations.

We’re also expanding our Dog Gone Reading program, which gives kids the chance to read with a certified therapy dog and trainer in a relaxed, confidence-boosting environment. Make an appointment with one of our friendly canine readers through our online calendar at http://bit.ly/WCLDogGoneReading.

Adult readers don’t need to feel left out, we’ve got some book lists to help improve your summer reading. Try some nonfiction that reads like fiction, or some nonfiction that would be perfect to read at the beach!

Finally, don't forget that June marks the kick-off of Summer at Your Library, with special programs, activities and events for kids, teens, and adults!
