Finding the best business books at the library

stack of business books

This piece was submitted by Angie Noyes, collection development librarian for Washington County Library. She has worked at WCL since 2000 when she joined the staff as a librarian at Hardwood Creek Library in Forest Lake.

Looking for books about jobs and careers on the shelves at Washington County Library might, at first, seem a little overwhelming. Books at the library are organized according to the Dewey Decimal System, and so many jobs-related books can be found in the 658s (General Management). But, you shouldn’t stop there when looking for your next business read. Here are a few other sections you can browse:

650.1 (Personal Success in Business) – In this section, you will find lots of topics of working in the business world, from how to be a team player to being a leader in your field or organization.

331.7s (Labor by Industry and Occupation) – This area has titles that are more data and fact based on careers in specific fields or specific job titles, like careers in trucking or as a chef. These numbers also correlate to our Juvenile nonfiction books, which are great for children who want to know about being, let’s say, a firefighter.

158.2-158.4 (Interpersonal Relations, Counseling and Interviewing, Leadership) – If you are looking more self-help titles in order to improve certain personal skill or confidence, then head over to the 158 shelves. Here you may find titles help assist your career such as The Art of Mingling or Winning From Within.

170.44 (Ethics, Moral Philosophy) – Sometimes, you are not looking for information regarding a career or a job, but ways to focus on personal growth in order to move forward in your job and life. The 170.44 area can help with that. You will find titles like Stay In Your LaneBeing Perfect or The World According to Mister Rogers.

305.56 (Social Groups and Social Classes) – If you are looking to expand your knowledge or understanding the realities for some workers, then visit the 305s. This section focuses on serious topics such as classes, the working class, and the working poor.

When you come to the library looking for books to assist with your job or career, be sure to look beyond the 658s in nonfiction. If you’re looking for help navigating the shelves (or our online catalog), your local librarian will be happy to help!
